Bottom Structure -Soil is directly recognizable, light layer of mud on sandbank recognizable (greenish/yellowish above the red one) on DragonFly. In addition, the DragonFly shows weed on the bank while the WiFish only shows a rough structure. Both systems provides a good overview from the bottom course.
Choose the right STRATEGY
Vegetation is displayed excellent on both systems. The Bottom hardness is also shown under heavy vegetation. In our example, there's almost 2m of plants above the ground and still the bottom structure is shown. Find clear spots or fish against some weeds. The downscan can provide a photo realistic image from vegetation and obstacles by using higher frequencies. The Dragonfly‘s colour screen displays vegetation, obstacles as arches in a different colour scale than the bottom, while the downscan gives you a more detailed picture. The DragonFly benefits by using both.
raymarine Best way to determine the Soil
With the Raymarine WiFish & DragonFly you can perfectly determine the bottom hardness. Normally on the DragonFly a hard bottom will show a thicker dark coloured base line than a softer bottom. The WiFish also indicates the hardness by the colour of the baseline, The whiter the harder.
However, the best way to determine the bottom hardness is at least to double the actual depth in the settings menu. By doing this you will see multiple bottom layers (+/-3). With this view you can determine the hardness by comparing the different layers. A hard bottom can be recognized by a strong reflection in the bottom layers, a softer bottom gives a bad or weak reflection! With the DragonFly it's easier to determine the hardness because of the colour screen but this method also works on the WiFish.
